I'm trying to work on my coloring skills - they're pretty good with watercolor, but there's plenty of room for improvement with digital, gouache, oils, or anything that's opaque. What I figure that means is that I don't actually know what I'm doing, and using watercolor as a crutch, I can just glaze on until I get something that looks good.

Stumbling around until I find something that looks good is not a way that I want to continue to work. So here's this photoshop painting that I'm working on - the line drawing and then what I've painted so far.

The things I'm having trouble with in particular are varying the coloration on the skin of the beastie without having it look like it's shaded (the white markings esp.), and the abdomen area (and really the back too back there). The shadows back there get really muddy, which in my experience means that I'm overworking it because I don't know what the hell I'm doing there.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.
