does every pro or semi pro half decent bass player who uses a pick neccessarily have to be able to do alternate picking in order to hold their own in a band, or can you just build up good enuff endurance to do all downstrokes?

reason i ask is because im finding it a little difficult, for some reason...i can get up a good speed with the picking, but then the pick like, trips up on the string (if that makes sense) and its really annoying! ive tried different picks but it happens to different degrees with all of em and its affecting the timing and smoothness of my basslines really badly. It especially happens when i switch between strings, especially on the E and the A

At the moment im assuming its just a case of practicing, like it was when i started to play guitar. I can strum pretty darn fast no problem on guitar, but bass really throws me off because the "strumming" has to be so precise, being as it is only on one string at a time (i never learned to shred).
