Caught a couple of drum clinics over the summer in th UK and wanted to ask if anyone else caught them and what their opinions were. ps dunno if this has already been discussed as havent been online for a while.
the first was the terry bozzio clinic featuring the drummer from the charlatans and carl palmers cousin...somebody palmer (no good with names). the charlatans drummer was average but none the less entertaining nice guy. palmer played an hour jazz set with the standard of a session player even tho he is a full time pilot and just considered it a hobby. his jazz playing and often soloing which was incorporated into the music perfectly was flawless and v inspirational. bozzio however played an hours drummin to a world backing track, which was as monotonous as dying of testicular cancer. i had expected so much from a drummer who has played on some incredible tracks with the likes of zappa, but had to leave 15 min from the end. there was very little change throughout the set as he close rolled around his kit including 10 or so toms without any variation. he also didnt speak a single word to the crowd throughout.
nick mcbrain however held one of the best clinics ive ever seen with an hour or two of playin to an incredible standard soloing and with a backing band. this clinic also included a two hour conversation with the crowd recalling past iron maiden classic tales from giggin on the road, lots of helpful drummin tips for players of all standards and an auction of the sticks/sweat bands etc he had worn during the clinic to raise over £200 for the clive burr (original iron maiden drummer) trust to help find a cure for MS. An absolute mint bloke with some of the best drumming techniques in metal, who knows exactly what makes a good drummer.
and i got a photo with the guy, oh ta!
