Posted at December 13, 1901, 2:45 pm: Here is another tutorial I wrote. It's for beginners. Please let me know if you find any errors in it or if you think that something could be done more efficiently. Thank you. --------------------------------------- Customizing Illustrator patterns. You downloaded a free Illustrator pattern presets from Adobe Studio Exchange, you like the pattern but you would want to change some colors in it, make the pattern larger or change something else? In this tutorial you will learn how to customize a pattern for your needs. 1. Open the document that contains the pattern swatch you want to customize. Make sure that your artwork is locked, so you won’t accidentally edit it too, select and drag the pattern onto your artwork area. 2. Ungroup the tile: Object > Ungroup. Now you can modify the pattern like any other object: scale, modify shapes with Pen tool, change colors, move and delete shapes. Just make sure that your tile still has a rectangular shape and none of the shapes in it go over the tile border. 3. To replace one color with another color select the shape that has a color you want to change. Go to Select > Same Fill Color. Choose new color from the color palette. 4. When you done with editing, select the whole pattern tile and Alt drag the modified swatch in Swatches palette to make a new swatch. Or drag it on top of the old swatch to replace it. How to modify the pattern applied to an object 1. Scale the pattern uniformly. Got to Object > Transform > Scale. To scale a pattern without scaling the filled shape choose Uniform scale, enter the amount of scaling. In Options check the patterns box, leaving Scale Strokes & Effects and Objects boxes unchecked. Click Ok. 2. Scale the pattern non-uniformly. Got to Object > Transform > Scale. To squeeze or stretch a pattern choose Non-Uniform scale, enter the amount of scaling, in Options check the patterns box, leaving Scale Strokes & Effects and Objects boxes unchecked. Click Ok. 3. Change colors in the pattern. Object > Expand. Check the Fill box, leave stroke unchecked. Now the pattern is editable, it’s just a set of shapes grouped together with a clipping mask applied to it. Select the shape with Direct Selection tool and Select > Same Fill Color. Choose new color from the color palette. 4. Modify individual shapes within the pattern. After you expanded objects fill use Pen tool or Direct Selection tool to move, modify or delete individual shapes.
