Posted at March 1, 2006, 12:04 pm: Hey everyone, I apologize, I haven't posted anything in this section for a long time. For the past few days, I've been hanging out with my friend Nicolas. One night we were sitting in the kitchen of a friends place, and Nic challenged me to a redesign of classical Marvel Villians. He started working on the Green Goblin and I was supposed to do Sabretooth. Nic got bored real quick and didn't finish his character. I put my finished Sabretooth aside and we went out for a drink. The next morning, I was sitting in the kitchen again, checking out my drawing, and I thought to myself, man, I should really give it a try and redesign all those awesome X-Men characters that I loved so much as a teenager. It had been ages, since I had a X-Men comic in my hands, so I just relied on my memories for this task. Soon after I finished the first few characters, the fever caught me, and I started making up new stories for the characters, trying to give them a modern flair and a down to earth touch. I started coming up with plot concepts taking my 18 redesigns and breaking them up into six brackets, each focusing on three protagonists, with similar goals, weaknesses, ideologies, ideosyncrasies, etc... All this started to get out of hand pretty fast, became larger and larger, as the design process came along. Well, here is what I got so far. The whole redesign took three days alltogether, from the first idea, to the final layout. As always, these were done without ref. The Righteous: The members of this group strongly believe in a future, where Mutants and Humans can live together peacefully and they are willing to sacrifice everything for this goal, even their own lives and sanity. They have yet to realize, that their struggles are futile and that mankind will never accept another race in their midst. They will have to learn the bitter lesson of failure, when they are forced to understand that in dire need, man will always turn it's back on them. Cyclops: I wanted to get Cyclops out of his "Sunny Boy" image and give him more of a Johnny Knoxville kind of look. A more weathered and lanky guy, that has a better sense of fashion then the old nerdy version. Cyclops is still the leader of the X-men, but not because anyone voted him into this position, but because everyone else is too lazy or irresponsible to take this place. Gambit: Remy LeBeau? French? Well, maybe french, but with gypsy roots at leats, or is that politcally incorrect? Anyways, I pictured Gambit to be a fool with a big heart, a cleptomaniac, someone who can hand out a good brawl, but doesn't look like it at all. He loves humanity, loves the girls, the drinks, the parties. He is a man full of life and he would be even happier if Mutants and Humans could finally mate and have fun together and dance until the end of days. Colossus: I always felt Colossous to be one of the more underated X-Men. In my version, Colossus discovered his powers as a small skinny boy, that always got beat up by his schoolmates. They would kick him and throw rocks at him until he curled up and turned into steel as a reaction to the pain others caused in him. Later, he started building a fortress of muscles around himself that would keep him safe from people trying to hurt him. But the small skinny boy still dwells in the corners of his soul and when the boy is forced to the surface, the giant Colossus is rendered helpless, curling up into a statue of steel again. The Furious: The Furious all share an utter and deep hatred for humanity as a whole. They have suffered enormously as outcasts from society throughout their lives and they were deemed pariahs for their looks alone. Revenge is broiling in the back of their minds, they want to pay back what they had to go through. But they have to learn that not all humans are against them and that there are those who are worth saving and fighting for. Beast: Oh, c'mon, why do you have to make Beast become a blue teddy bear? This version is supposed to give Hank McCoy a littly more credit and dignity. Instead of being a big scientist, I imagined him being more of a great Flamenco dancer, a bouncer and legbreaker for underworld criminals and a pretty social guy, who enjoys the company of his fellow Mafioso. In this version, Beast has a spleen for dressing fancy, even though he's never gonna find shoes that fit his feet. Wolverine: Ok, no more Mr. Nice Guy. Wolverine has always been somewhat of the secret hero of the X-men, the tough fighter with the big heart. We wanted to get him out of this clicheé and make him more of a Hooligan, a Mutant supremascist. Wolverine is now fucked up alkie, who enjoys and taking out whole bars on his own, who percieves mankind to be parasites who are just strong in numbers but fail to be special as individuals. His heart has grown cold and even fellow X-men feel disgusted by his presence and worldview. Nightcrawler: All his life Nightcrawler was an outcast, dwelling in subway systems, sewers and abandoned houses nurturing his hatered for the humans who loathed and despised him in the past. Recently he decided to to take his revenge and with the help of a few supporters, he founded a devil worshipping cult in which he himself plays as a vessel of Satan himself. His fellowship is growing and they pay enourmous amounts of cash, to see Nightcrawler slaughter chicken and cats and growl in unspeakable tounges. The money finally made for a nice home, without rats, where Nightcrawler retreats for a day of rest. The Desperate: The Desperate are at the brink of sanity and survival. The members are suffering from a mass of problems that appear to be unsolvable. Their situation starts getting out of control and they will need the help of many hands to overcome what makes their lives so terribly misarable in the now. Professor X: The Professor had to retreat from his leadership. He is a feeble old man with shattered beliefs now. All his life he struggled for a world in which Man and Mutant could live together in a peaceful and unified way. But he has looked into too many souls and had to realize that war, treachery and deceit, opression, destruction and violence will always prevail and overcome his hopes for a better future. He gave up. All day he is closed up in his library, trying to forget the hell that he saw resting within the souls of all men, desperatly waiting for his death without an afterlife... Archangel: Rich. Beautiful. Angel wings. The power to soar the skies and the money to buy anything he desires. What does a man do, that has everything? A man who easily gets every pussy he wants? Who doesn't have to fear the tomorrow? He grows tired. Bored. Suicidal. Archangel is dying from a life that doesn't challenge him anymore. His cocain-addiction helps him to escape his lethargy for a few hours, but when the effect wears off, the downcome is horrible. He has been staring into the sun a lot lately. Dying like a Phoenix, like an Icarus, with all guns fired, commiting suicide while life feels best and other similiar thoughts a rushing through his mind. If he could only find anything that is worth living for... Banshee: Banshee's powers have spiraled out of control. His deathscream, that saved the lives of his comrades in the past, when used against a common enemy, has taken over Banshee's voice as a whole. He can't even whisper the slightes "Boo" anymore, without causing dire pain in everyone nearby. He has to retreat into an unwanted solitude, in which he isn't allowed to speak up at all. He can only use sign language to communicate and it drives him nuts, cause he has so much to say. Day and night he is awake, trying to capture and write down his thoughts in hopes that anyone will read them and listen to what he has to say, but nobody has the time. His anger is growing. One day, Banshee will speak up again, and there will be nothing but silence left afterwards. The Treacherous: The Treacherous are connected by one common goal. To bring down the man who broke their collective hearts. Archangel. All of them fell into his lovetrap, developed feelings for his flamboyant soul, his eloquent mind and his angelic looks. Now, that they've all been betrayed, they want nothing more but to crush him like a fly. And as bitches are when they cling together to badmouth a common enemy, Archangel is stylized into a Uberdemon and the whole drama get's blown way out of proportion. Storm: I always pictured Storm more like a voodoo witch, who control's the weather with bloddy rituals rather then shooting lighting bolts with her hands. She was the first to succumb to Archangel. Her pride has been shattered when she found out he just fooled around with her, it stings her like a knife in the back that a man could trick her and she needs her revenge to restore her overly feministic ego. She is preparing a ritual, in which Archangel is supposed to lose his ability to fly... Rogue: Rogue's grudge against Archangel stems from getting dumped before anything ever happened. She was the youngest and Archangel her first big crush but he treated her like she had a sexual disease, due to her powers of Absorbtion. She offered him his heart, but he dind't care and shunned her away. Day after day she cried for her unfullfilled love until love turned into anger and anger into disgust and disgust finally into hatered. She wants him to suffer for his arrogance and is willing to help the others fullfill their plan. Jean Grey: Jean is furious. Archangel seduced her to cheat on her husband Cyclops. She fell in love, already made plans in the back of her mind to get divorced and spend her life with the winged man, when Archangel told her she wasn't the right girl for him and that her years with Cyclops dried her out. She fled back into Cyclops arms, behaving overly affectionate, in hopes she'd forget that she cheated on her husband and to get rid of the guilt, but the memories keep on crawling back to her at night. She is afraid of Archangel boasting around how he managed to screw her and Cyclops finding out about her deceit. So she banded up with Storm and Rouge to finally get Archangel out of their entire lives. She kept three of his feathers that Storm needs for her ritual. Soon all will be over and the dreams wont come back. So she thinks... The Frivolous: This group doesn't give a shit about politics, Mutants, Humans, groups and whatnot. They care solely for themselves and they want nothing else but their own asses to be safe. They blend into society far better then all of their fellow Mutants, because they are adaptable and don't generalize. For them, every life has the same worth and each one should be lived as rich and exciting as possible. Maybe herein lies the only future for Mutants and Man to coexist on the same planet. Cannonball: That young boy from Kentucky just came to the big city. Everything is so huge and rough but he takes it with his charming smile and his oldschool gentleman demeanor. Be it helping an old lady cross the street or escorting a babe back home after a night in the club, Cannonball feels good in his role as a caregiver. He is a good soul to the core, he gets more out of fishing and herding cows then partying through nightclubs or live excessivly. He's still looking for the right girl at his side, someone who shares his love for horses, farms and the thanksgiving turkey. Iceman: I tried getting Iceman out of his fratboy look and give him the appearance of a skater. He's chilled, relaxed and loves hanging out with his friends and teammates. He is ambitious though. One day he want's to replace Cyclops in his leadership. He considers the current leader to be too otherwordly and unconnected with what happens around him. Iceman's ability is to blend in with social groups and break the ice between different factions, makes for a perfect leader. Bishop: In the old version of X-men, Bishop was a time travelling mercenary with big guns. Doh! I chose to root him in reality more. In this version, Bishop was a druglord prior to finding out about his mutant abilities. One of these powers was that he was able to see fragments of the future. A future in which Mutants will be enslaved by humanity and driven to the brink of extinction. To avoid slavery, Bishop now uses his drugmoney to built a fortress around himself, buying weapons and ammonition for his gangmembers, to be ready for the final battle. His army is growing in numbers and ferocity. They will sacrifice their lives for their Bishop. At all costs. The Vicious: The last group of Mutants are those who succumbed to their own vices. This group has just one thing in common. Complete destruction of humanity and the mutants who are against this cause. A dark secret dwells in all of them. A fuel, that triggers their nightmarish plans and that needs to be revealed, before it is too late. Magneto: In this version Magneto wields the power as one of the most influentual crime lords in existence. He uses his magnetic powers to manipulate the stock market for his cause, amassing money and influence in politics and industry, for his final strike. He want's a third world war to break out, so he can rise to dictatorship in it's tumult and further his goals. World domination is not enough. No, a world that consists of technocratic patters, mathematics, a life predetermined for everyone, where there reigns no casulty and coincidence, no murder and greed anymore. A place that is as peaceful as your refridgerator. Juggernaut: In the original X-men, Juggernaut is Professor Xavier's half- brother. I took this identity away from him. Now, nobody knows who the Juggernaut is, or where he came from. But one thing is clear, he want's to kill every mutant alive and he is unstopable on his warpath. Nobody has ever heard him say a word, he just seems to growl and he tracks other mutants by the trail of fear that they leave in the air. Every confrontation with the Juggernaut has been deadly so far and escape the only option for survival. Everytime, the Juggernaut retreated back into the sewers that he came from, only to reappear weeks later out of the blue. Whatever dwells behind this mask, it is the X-Men's worst enemy. Sabretooth: When the moon calls, it causes Sabretooth to run rampant for blood. It is his nectar, his killer instinct draws him to every new prey. Man or mutant, it doesnt matter, his murderous agenda just needs a new challenge. And the X-men are a perfect foe. They are harder to take out then the feeble humans around him... So, while I was working on my version of X-men, Michel a mutual friend of ours, who is a cartoonist and editorial illustrator started doing a funny redesign of my X-men version. We cracked up so hard, we had to post it alongside these designs. Then Nic and I did a collaboration piece. He took one of my drawings and colored it and added the graphic design to it. I hate him because he's so good. Anyways, here it is. Yeah, while I was obsessed with my X-men, Nic did another two illustrations, one of Batman, and another one of the Shocker, an old Spiderman Villian. Here they are.
