Posted at September 21, 2006, 6:23 am: When i create high-tech environments, i prefer starting on a paper, with rulers, erasers, very light pencils, etc. Here we see one of those sketches (Figure 1). I set the perspective lines with the vanishing point first, and then i created the shapes. I knew i’m taking this into computer, so i didn’t care about the light in the moment. Figure 1: Next, i set a simple blue sky (Figure 2). I wanted a nice day situation, so i pulled a white-to-transparent gradient over the horizon. That gives the impression of a very bright day. Figure 2: Figure 3 shows my setting of values. Remember the “1, 2, 3” rule, where "1" is the extreme foreground and the darkest value while "3" is the extreme background and has the highest value. At this point, i decided not to go for a photo realistic painting, but for a colored sketch. I love that style, reminds me of comics i read. Figure 3: So, i pulled back the values (Figure 4) and let the drawing come out behind the paint. To increase that cartoony effect, i gave the piece more saturation. Values lost relation though. Figure 4: I got very nervous about that and simply decided to go even more towards sketch by desaturating the colors and working on the values a bit more (Figure 5). Adding tiny little highlights helped giving the three-dimensional feel to it, even if the sketch is messy like this one here. At that point, i was happy with the overall feeling and took my hands of it.
