Hi everyone

This is one of my first posts here, although I have been lurking silently for some time now, enjoying all those amazing and highly detailed sculptures that get posted here often.
I'm not really a sculpting kind of guy, as I lean more towards dioramas and terrain building in different scales (1/32, 1/54). For the last few months I've been thinking about creating a small broken tree trunk that have been dead for some time, really old with visible bark texture and old dead branches. It can be this or a normal sized tree which is still in good condtition or maybe a broken tree trunk, which is standing inside a really old forest with lots of green plants and leaves and flowers and everything. Anyway the main thing in my next project is going to be a tree and of course to make a realistic tree I need to imitate bark really well or it will just not work. So do you have any ideas how to do it? What sort of tool could I use that would help me achieve a good tree bark texture?
I've seen a lot of cool skin textures here and I think some of those techniques used for creating realistic old skin can be helpful, so if you know anything about that it would be great if you could drop a link or even a simple description.
I tried using dental tools and different brushes and this is what I have achieved so far:

-plasticine, it's a clay that always stays soft so it's no use, but it was just a test piece, I've used a bigger hard bristle brush for this one

- also plasticine, also a test piece, soft bristle brush was used and a dental tool to add the lines

- oven baking clay, not very good

- again plasticine, more bumpy surface

Well the biggest problem is to recreate all the horizontal small cracks that normally appear on the surface of the bark. My pieces are just too vertical, more like parallel lines than bark.

So can you suggest anything? What can I use, what tools or techniques. I will work with SuperSculpey this time.

Thanks a lot in advance for any help.

Cheers,
dsc.
