Hi all

I've been reading some of the threads in this great forum. I finally decided to register and write my first post. I would like to know your experience about art classes.

Here's mine:
Im a 26 yr old guy currently working in a non-art related industry. My goal is to become a 3D character animator. I've read some info that traditional art skills are valued in this kind of field. Since I can't really draw that well...I decided to do something about it before learning any 3D software. I took a part-time art class at a nearby community college. Since I wanted to start from the basics, I decided to take a class called basic western art. The class runs once a week and based on the brochure, it sounds like the class Im looking for.

The class, however, was not what I had expected. On the first day, we were told to sit down and start to draw, no instructions. The art teacher told us that she wanted to evaluate our drawing skills before doing anything else. Fair enough. As weeks goes by, still no or little instructions like "that doesn't look like the bottle is made of glass". Instead of telling us our mistakes, the teacher would simply sit beside and draw for us. I didn't pay for someone to draw for me. How can I show others my drawings that were not drawn by me. She told me "Art can't be taught".

I was hoping for some instructions like dealing with shading, tones and values. I felt I lack in this areas. One time, I was mocked in front of the class because the hand I drew didn't look like a woman's hand. If I could realistically draw a woman's hand, I would'nt be in this class right? I just kept quiet and kept on drawing, to my best ability, to draw a woman's hand. I began to wonder if I was in the right class..is this an advance drawing class?

Another bad thing was, the teacher was also taking care of another class at the same time. There were times when we were left to ourselves while she attend to the other class in the other room. Still, I just kept on drawing. After 10 lessons, we proceed to Charcoal drawing. I found that interesting since I never used charcoal before. After 10 lessons of charcoal drawing, we started to learn watercolor. Although, I find watercolor interesting, I felt that I should go back to drawing with pencil in order to improve my drawings before handling the brush. My request was rejected. She told me that I would find it boring sticking to pencil drawing. I was disappointed as the class was advancing to other mediums before I could improve. Finally, I had enough and decided to drop out from the class. I might as well learn by myself through art books since there was no difference.

To be fair, I dont blame my art teacher as I find that she is actually a well trained artist but unfortunately, a poor instructor. She did open my eyes to the world of art that I did'nt know, like art history. She advise me to learn more about other artist works like Leonardo and others. She did invite me to her local nude drawing club where I drew life figure drawing, no instructions as it was more like a practise than a learning class. Perhaps taking care of two classes at the same time was too much for her. I was just disappointed at not getting enough instructions like shading, tones, values, shadows, etc. Im not trying to be demanding or anything...just want to learn. Sorry for my long rant.

Right now, Im skeptical about taking anymore art classes. I would rather learn from a book although my art teacher warned me about the book controlling the way I draw. I understand that but I would rather be able to draw first and develop my own style later.

Also, I began to ask questions like where does drawing help in 3D animating? How good in drawing do I have to be in order to start 3D animation? Do I have to be able draw as good as the other famous artists? Am I trying to become a fine artist..no...I want to be an animator. Although there's nothing wrong with having good drawing skills, I think time is a factor. To be able to draw really well (realistic drawings), it take years of practise. I find that time can be better used to learn other skills like acting and timing which are essential to animating.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I think you should really focus on what you want to do.

Roger(rogfa), thanks for the info man! I've got those two books and Je...

Computer animation doesn't require as much drawing as 2d does.

Thanks for the link, PHL.
