Posted at October 12, 2006, 12:07 am: I am curious about the science behind this and would appreciate an answer from people who know something about nutrition. Consider the hypothetical example of Charlie, who is trying to gain as much muscle mass as possible. Charlie is getting the optimal amount of protein each day. People disagree about what that is, but let's say it's 2x bodyweight grams per pound. Charlie weighs 150 lbs, so he wants to get 300 grams of protein each day. And it's generally considered a good idea when bulking to get 18-20 times your bodyweight in calories. So rounding up, Charlie needs to get 3000 calories and 300 grams of protein each day. Let's say that on Monday Charlie drinks 15 scoops of whey brand X, which is 100 calories and 20 grams of protein each scoop. He has gotten 300 grams of protein, and 1500 calories. This means he still needs to eat 1500 calories throughout Monday. Why and how does it matter -- from a muscle-building standpoint -- where these remaining 1500 calories come from? Let's say in Case A he eats 10 cookies. In each cookie there is 150 calories, 7g fat and 16g carbs. In Case B, Charlie instead eats 1500 calories worth of oats and olive oil, amounting to a similar ratio of fats to carbs as in Case A. What is the difference between Case A and B, from a muscle-building standpoint? I am asking this question because I am curious from a scientific standpoint, but also because I usually eat very clean. And recently I had a craving to try a certain type of cookie I saw in the supermarket. And it was really good. So I want to eat them. I'm curious about the difference between eating a cookie to get my last 150 calories of the day vs something clean like a tbsp of olive oil.
