Posted at September 17, 2006, 10:29 pm: This has been a long week of poker for me. Maybe not in the case of most people, but going down 800BB in a matter of days for me was pretty big (okay, $800). Granted, I had just finished winning all that over at Full Tilt and Poker Loco, so it was a null set. But it was the idea that none of my hands were holding up to the river, and I was getting killed, and I wanted to know what to do differently. However, after lurking around the site all weekend, and with the help of Doc, Mike, Thomas, Whoo, and a few others I can't think of since it's 0130 right now, I decided to play it up differently. If you would have told me that on-the-button raises with J10s or K9s with five limpers was something that I would be doing this weekend, I would have told you that you were nuts. But there it is. Based on forum advice, I switched it up. Got a little crazy, went down to 50NL and instead of trying to knock it out of the park at 100NL with my big hands every time and end up losing anyway. I put the "call" button away, and was a raising fool. Only hands I was playing was if I was raising from position. K33 on the flop and I've got a pair of 6s? You better believe I'll make a small bet. Raise late with 109s and completely miss the flop? Continuation bet! And BOOM! Wouldn't you know it, but more people would just stay out of the pot with less than a great hand, figuring that I had something. So there I am, stealing to beat the band with total garbage hands, because I'm coming in from all angles with every medium suited connector or pocket pair, no one can tell where I'm coming from. And yeah, I got burned being a donk too, and the variance was WAY higher than it usually is. But at the end of the day, and for the first night in an entire week, I ended the evening at the tables back up. I actually went from -$70 to +130 from this time yesterday at 50NL. Two of the big hands were total flukes I never would have played at 100NL; broke a guy's KK with A8s after ending up on a flush draw, and a missed AQs with a gutshot straight on the flop caught me a miracle turn on a continuation bet. It was crazy. And BOY, did I hear some cursing. Typically, I was on the receiving end of such donkage; this time, it was me for a change. Okay, clearing bonuses at 50NL is painful. If I can win this kind of lewt on top of any bonus...I guess it goes back to the difference between being a successful whore and a successful poker player. And now with all these new tricks in my arsenal and at a level where I feel VERY confident at pushing my stack around, I'm actually enjoying myself. So again, much love out to the forum whores who were quick with responses to all of my questions. Even if it all goes to shit tomorrow, you've helped me build my confidence back up.
