My first reaction was that this bill that passed the Senate is really bad news.
Then upon reflection, I started thinking. It will be some time before the new law goes into effect, and during that time the big money from the poker sites will be working on ways to undermine it. I imagine there are loopholes and work-arounds, and the sites will find the way to implement them. Remember when the FCC banned advertising for poker sites? Suddenly, they came up with the idea of .net sites, and today there are more ads for poker on TV than ever before. The same thing will happen here.
Also, the only people who are even aware of this new law are the hard-core players like us and folks on 2+2, etc. The casual player who fires up his computer on Friday night for a little 3/6 one-tabling has no clue that anything has changed.
I imagine that there will be legal challenges to this law, and perhaps they can even get a judge to order an injunction on its implementation, buying us even more time.
In short, it is fun to get worked up about "martial law" and the eroding of personal freedoms, but the fact is that this has been going on for some time in other realms of society (can anyone say the "war on drugs?") and life goes on, albeit with somewhat more difficulty. I am cautiously optomistic that this is latest chapter is much ado about nothing (or very little.)Andrew26 wins pot $.95, with a Royal Flush, spades.
