Need some direction.

How important do you think it is to draw from reference? I know still lifes are extremely important along with all studies of life and photographs. My art teacher has pounded it into my head that you MUST draw EVERYTHING from reference, all completed works of art should be referenced in his eyes. I used to draw everything out of my head.. whenever I got sick of the way I drew I'd do a bunch of anatomy studies until I was happy with how I could draw. Is it really necessary to draw from reference every time.. or just until you can draw it accurately? Or am I thinking too hard about this?
