hey all. i just figured i'd post this demo i did recently. same as the last one, part sketchbook with a digital finish. i have been doing work similar to this approach recently for some album cover work, and find it works great for print jobs. so first step, i pencil it out. i got a little overzealous on thisone and forgot to scan befor i started inking, so there are a few ink lines in there: now i ink completely. i dont really hatch or render much, so as not to overwork it, since i'll be coming in with the usual inkwash gouache thing. so heres the ink:
then i come in with the inkwash, with which i apply the local colors, and got kinda crazy on the background by dropping alcohol repeatedly all over it as it dries::
now its ready for colored pencils, which i begin to pull the forms with the middle to middle-light tones: then i come in with the gouache, which i use to punch areas and tighten edges. i find it helpful to not only work inside the figure, but to also go behind it and work into the background, to better pop the figure: at this point, i scan it, and work a bit more on the background, as at thispoint i felt the need to pop him out a bit further:
now i take him into painter, use the scratchboard tools on the specular highlights on the armor, and use the glow tool to unify the skintones a bit, and then take it back into ps, where i apply a couple of texture overlays to amke the surface texture a bit more interesting:
and thats it. fun and easy, probably spent about 2-3 hours on this one.-c36
