Posted at June 14, 2006, 11:31 pm: Well, I can't upload my pics right now as my computer is being reformatted so I figure I'd post up some notes I took. It doesn't really make sense, but maybe other ppl will put the same ideas into better words... 1) set the brush to paint two colors at once...i'm actually not quite sure how to do this but i know for sure that painter IX does it, or perhaps you can set the line to bevel? this gives depth to objects like a lamp post or a rope bridge...saves time on shading... 2) adding flying buttresses to buildings and structures - gives a sense of support and just a nice design element that i wouldn't have necessarily thought of using 3) use colors in the same planar space - in the bg use similar colors and the foreground use similar colors etc. a simple concept but just nice to repeat. 4) using stencils to create designs for backgrounds when you just need to fill space or create a graphic look. i never thought of it cuz i guess i'm not very experienced, but it's such a great idea. andrew used this method with his airbrush on both a painting and also the life models. 5) always try shifting your digital paintings left, right, up and down. again simple concept but dan totally changed the look of his sparta (?) painting just by moving it over a little. 6) don't overwork the bg chars. think ambient perspective and focal point. 7) as for traditional painting for ppl who haven't tried...here are some tips (sorry if i copied these notes wrong, DS >.<): - white and black can be used to cool down a painting and can make blue - use red as a "transition" color on the edges of dark shadows - start warm and then work to cool colors - 50 percent cold pressed linseed (?) and 50 percent turpenoid <~~this creates less drip - synthetic retouch varnish - don't draw things too overly large or else it is hard to maintain proportions....for example don't necessarily try to draw a head that's 20x the size of a normal head. - raw umber + black = a good grey - when painting in glasses, do the shadows cast by the glasses, but leave the actual glasses frames for last. - WAIT FOR THE LAYER TO DRY. that way you can wipe off mistakes when you glaze in new colors. - if it gets muddy, wipe it off. don't keep working it. - crimson + black = good purple - deep shadows more warm-red - reflected light = warm - use scott rags to wipe, i think it doesn't leave lint and stuff on your work/brushes - 2 drops of cobalt dryer will help the drying process uhhhhh more painting notes to come... 8 ) I think Shawn said this - leave a white edge or put a white paper next to your work when scanning a large piece in sections. this will make sure that the sections scan in similar brightness etc. (i think? it's hard to explain...the scanner will use the white edge to compare all the values to?) 9) Shawn has a average of 4 days to complete a editorial. it can range from 2 days - 2 weeks. but this guy works like madman anyways....it's insane. 10) DS does 1-3 sketches for a client. don't send too many. 11) send stuff to the society of illustrator's annual or other books/annuals published. it's a great way to get other ppl to see your work. 12) be professional. don't rant on past clients/companies/ppl in general. you never know who is listening. 13) look for the colors beyond what you see. jason and andrew say there is a lot more green than they thought there was in stuff, but i don't always see it Original of the message was taken from http://www.conceptart.org/forums/ Replies:Sorry if anything got repeated, this is more stuff from DSIllustration...Anybody get down some of the nifty digital trick that Andrew and other...
