Grey scale armor you say?

Try this brush setting out:

Gouche: Opaque smooth (any size)
:: Change the resat to 10 and pick black or white.

Resat makes the color of the stroke change by useing the color under it. So, if you pick black and you do one stroke on white it will become 10% grey; If you do a stroke on that stroke it will be 20% grey; If you change your color back to white and do a stroke on the 20% grey you will drag it down to 10%. So, this will allow you the ability to buildup and build down your greyscale at warp speed.
