Posted at July 7, 2006, 6:01 am: Team name: Crowbird - Map Development Project name: Counter Strike Source Maps Brief description: As a general description of the project; we are seeking to establish a team of CSS mappers and 3D/2D artists to work on our own brand of CSS maps. Compensation: No pay Technology: A copy of Counter Strike Source would be good, however photoshop or painter can be use for texturing and general 3D programs for modelling. We will have a person who will import your work into the game map. Talent needed: 3D Low Poly Modellers 2D texture Artists CSS Mappers (If there are any on gamedev) Team structure: This is a new establishment; where we will have 4-6 members working on the maps. More details below. Website: www.crowbird.co.uk (Not much on their yet) Contacts: info@crowbird.co.uk c__d__t@hotmail.com (Please use my email address for contact; rather than a PM or post reply) Additional Info: This kind of project is fun and less time consuming than general game development, this would be ideal for artists with limited time. Feedback: NONE/ENCOURAGING ONLY Full Details: About Me: My name is Chris, I work as a full time Webmaster/Graphics Designer for a print studio. I usually play Counter Strike Source every few days or so, also known as ‘Justice’, and am very familiar with the game. I am also part of a hobbyist Game Development team: www.etgames.org is the website for a computer game we are working on; which I am administrating and working as the game designer. My interests are games, computers, sports, women and anything else related to fun. I live in London UK and will be working on our map projects mostly on evenings and weekends. My Experience: I do not work in the game industry, and am not an experienced CS Map Builder; however my strength is good game design skills with experience from games I have worked on and am working on. I have a good eye for game play, which is a subject that I research and have good insight on. I also posses competent design skills and am familiar with Hammer (World Craft), Photoshop, C4D and other design software, I even posses some sound mastering skills; with Audition (Cooledit) and Fruity Loops. My role in the team to become: Will be to administrate and to support the team, manage the website, produce some artwork and probably to either provide game play design for the level blue print or to completely produce the blue print if no one else volunteers to do so. Why build maps: To most of you reading this message, you probably know of the benefits, prospects and enjoyment gained from map making. But some may question such activity as pointless, too hard, too easy, too boring or too time consuming. My personal belief is that although there are 100s of thousands of maps out there; there are still probably only under a 100 that are popular, due to great design and exposure. Both great design and exposure will determine the success of any map IMO. To create great design, many hands make light work although many maps have been put together by 1 or 2 people. With limited resources there are limited design prospects. This is the main reason why I don’t desire to solo it. To expose our maps, we will need a level of marketing; which is something I practice daily in my work environment and will provide strategies to help gain popularity. Many people consider to go a step further, by producing stunning, realistic and complex looking maps or even game MODs. But I want to build maps that appeal to the mass, and to famous clans based on traditional CS game play, which will allow us to penetrate a larger audience. My concept is to build maps that are fun; due to intelligent design and not irritatingly over detailed or modified. Who am I looking for: Anyone who desires to make maps and posses good design or scripting skills, you are more than welcome to join. Rather than soloing, it is good to join a team and make life easier thus allowing time for more features to the maps. Someone could also work on texturing if they are not into 3D modelling. Requirements: We all must posses a copy of the game and truly enjoy it. Unless you wish to produce textures and Photoshop artwork, you will need to be familiar with CS mapping and the tools made for the work; such as the Hammer Editor. We will need one map maker to be experiencing with scripting and overall map making, who will be our head map developer. Other lesser experienced map makers will work with supervision to produce models and world geometry based on the level design. One member will need to produce the primary level design to work upon, which may be me if no one wishes to take on this duty. However I will supervise the level design to ensure that player team balance is the primary focus. The most important requirement is based on communication and availability. You will need to be online every week and will need to work for at least 5 hours per week to produce any benefit to the team. More experienced members will need to spend more time than that. We will have our own website, forum, IRC channel and team email addresses to maintain communication. Please do not attempt to take on CS map development unless you are aware that it is a daunting task, and very time consuming. There is no point joining the team and leaving half way through because of personal problems. If your woman is pregnant, your exams are coming up, your time is short or you’re on your way out of your job? Then it is not a good idea to consider this hobby, believe me it is time consuming and there is no use doing it if you are busy on something else. Your ideas and opinions are welcome as long as they are explained good, but final decisions are made as a team. If you want to join or you have questions, I would prefer if you asked them by emailing me at: info@crowbird.co.uk Please provide a list of your useful skills in this regard, links to sites you may have or attachments of any previous models, maps or textures. Contact me here: c__d__t@hotmail.com if I don’t get back to you within a day. I look forward to meeting you all. You are all welcome to provide any useful and rewarding advice for me, if you have any I do appreciate it. Keep the peace!
