Posted at July 27, 2005, 10:17 am: I just had a customer email me about the problems caused when she used paypal. She had given paypal access to her checking account. She thought she was paying with credit card but in truth she actually paid me with an instant transfer from her checking account. The sum was several hundred dollars and she was not prepared for it. Paypal does not have access to your checking account unless you gave it to them. A seller NEVER has access to your checking account. Once you give paypal permission to access your checking account they automatically have "instant transfer" as the default option of SOURCE OF FUNDS when you go to pay for an item. In order to change that you must do so manually when you make the payment. On the page that says SOURCE OF FUNDS - BANK ACCOUNT you will have to change it to SOURCE OF FUNDS-CREDIT CARD. Then paypal will ask the question "Are you sure you want to change to a credit card?". You will need to then reply with the answer YES. Be aware that the NO answer is DARKER than the YES answer. Paypal deliberately does this and it is VERY annoying hoping you will not be paying attention and will hit the NO reply instead. Once you click the YES answer it will convert to the credit card you have on record with them as the source of funds. WARNING, once you have done this if you change something with regards to your payment paypal again goes to the default of BANK ACCOUNT as the source of funds and you will have to do the above steps all over again. I too remember finding out about this the hard way. The ONLY way to confirm that you are paying with credit card and not your bank account is before you hit the MAKE PAYMENT button you look on the confirmation page and verify where the money is coming from. Make doubly sure it says credit card. If you don't you may make the discovery that you have bounced several checks because the money you thought was in your checking account was instead taken out by paypal and used to pay a seller.
