My first message on these boards, and more of a message to myself than anything else. I WILL return to it in a couple of months with news of success.

I stepped foot in the gym for the first time over a year ago at the age of 31, and after several months of wishful thinking and deluding myself, am forced to accept the fact that in all that time my body is exactly what it was a year ago.

As a teenager I was skinny-lean. As an adult I'm skinny-fat. 6', 200lbs, and 25% BF. The simple fact is that though I'm highly motivated, never miss the gym, work out hard and consistently, my goals are never reached due to my diet. I eat all the right things - lean protein, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, brown rice, EFAs. The problem is that I simply don't eat enough. Even when I feel that I'm stuffing my face all day to the point of being sick, when I count up the calories, they barely make 2000.

First, I cut, but it was unsuccessful. At the time I thought it was because I wasn't doing enough cardio. I now realise it was because I was not eating enough and my body was clinging to fat as though my life depended on it.

Second, I bulked, but it was unsuccessful. I quit doing cardio altogether and though I gained muscle, it was accompanied by a LOT of fat.

Third, I tried cutting again and lost all that muscle in about two weeks straight while retaining all the fat. The reason is simple - once again, I let my guard down and didn't eat enough.

I've never been a big eater, even as a kid I only ever ate one meal a day. At the weekend I sat down and spent the day working out my new diet. I'm sticking to it. Getting even the 2400 calories required on a cut is really tough. I've managed to consume 2400cals a day for four days now. I feel bloated and sick, but I supose my body has to go through some adjustment seeing as it's been consistently starved for the best part of 30 years. Combined with the weights and cardio, which I KNOW I'm doing right, I'm determined to stick with it despite how uncomfortable I feel. I WILL SUCCEED!

I'm not looking forward to bulking. How the hell do I eat 3500cals a day when just 2500 cals makes me sick? I'll worry about that later...
