Today, I tried out a gym which had new Bench/Chest Press type machines [Hammer Strength & Life Fitness]. The older Chest Press machine at my YMCA can be adjusted to provide a range of motion similar to a free weight bench press, but these new machines could only provide a smaller range of motion. I noticed I could lift more weight on these newer machines. Are there any advantages to using a lesser range of motion on bench press type exercises and other lifts? What are the disadvantages?

You could use it if you have a strained rotator cuff.

you will work your triceps more from the sounds of it.

Your points about periodization make sense to me.

Stay away from machines, lift heavy lift hard eat big.
